Summer camp receipts for a dependent care FSA
Log each child's camp weeks with their dates, then print a receipt or year-end statement for every family at once.
How it works for a camp
Add one family's first week: the child, the date paid, the amount and the camp dates (Monday to Friday). Choose Repeat every week until the last week, and every session goes in with its own dates. A payment for two children splits between them. In August or January, open Statements and print an FSA receipt for every family, listing each week, or a year-end statement with the year's total.
Day camp counts, overnight camp does not
IRS Publication 503: "The cost of sending your child to an overnight camp isn't considered a work-related expense. The cost of sending your child to a day camp may be a work-related expense, even if the camp specializes in a particular activity." A dependent care FSA follows basically the same tests (Publication 15-B). Choose the type Overnight camp for those weeks: US statements and FSA receipts leave them out of the child care total and list them on their own line.
In Canada the CRA counts camps where lodging is involved, and Form T778 limits the claim per week. Enter the number of weeks with each overnight payment and the receipt shows them; for the 2025 tax year it also works out the limits. For later years it names the 2025 figures and asks the parent to check the new form.
Questions camps ask
Does summer day camp count for a dependent care FSA?
It can. IRS Publication 503 says the cost of a day camp may be a work-related expense, even if the camp specializes in an activity such as computers or soccer, when it lets the parents work. Publication 15-B says dependent care FSA rules are basically the same as the credit's.
Is overnight camp covered?
Not in the US. Publication 503 says the cost of an overnight camp isn't a work-related expense. Here overnight weeks are left out of the child care total and listed on their own line, so the parent sees what was paid and why it is not counted.
What should a camp receipt for an FSA show?
The dates of each session and the amount for it, the child, and the camp's name, address and taxpayer number, signed by the camp. The FSA pays once the care has been given (IRS Chief Counsel Advice 202317020), so give each week its dates.
What about overnight camp in Canada?
The CRA counts camps where lodging is involved, with a weekly limit. On Form T778 for 2025 it was $200 a week for a child born in 2019 or later, $275 if the disability amount can be claimed, and $125 for a child born 2009 to 2018. Receipts list the overnight weeks so the parent can apply it.
Do camp registration fees count?
Publication 503 counts fees and deposits a family must pay to get care, but not a deposit forfeited when no care was given. They are counted by default; untick them under Statements if you list them another way.
